Unveiling the Future: Danis' Nick Larkins on The GREAT Convergence in Sustainable and SMART Building Technologies

Nick Larkins, Danis Director of ICT Systems, recently had the opportunity to write for BICSI's ICT Today. In the article, he discusses sustainability and how he approaches it from an overall design perspective, integrating SMART Building technologies.

With Danis, I have had the opportunity to take a deeper dive into SMART Building Technolgies, including from both a decarbonization and IT/OT perspective. The goal is to implement correctly the from conceptual phase of a project. We work on some of the most challenging Healthcare, Life Science, and Secure Space projects that I have ever been a part of. Understanding how to effectively integrate these technologies has been a key component to overall project success.

The Data Center is the perfect example of a resilient facility in which the various components of a SMART building are being implemented.
What is SMART?

What is SMART?

There are many takes on the definition of SMART.  When I was asked what it means, here is how I define it:

Sustainable

Managed

Automated

Resilient

Technology

After delving dep into this subject, my main conclusion is encapsulated in the title of my article The GREAT Convergence - Sustainable and SMART Building Technologies. I firmly believe that comprehending the fusion of sustainable and SMART building technologies and its influence on the built environment represents the forefront of facility design, construction, and operations.

Nick's article is featured in the April/May/June 2024 issue of ICT Today.
